How to recognize a contemporary piece of art? Beating the bounds by Grayson Perry:

1. Is it in a gallery or an art context?
2. Is it a boring version of something else?
3. Is it made by an artist?
4. Photography. Problematic.
   If they're smiling, it's probably not art.
5. The Limited Edition test.
6. The handbag and hipster test.
There's lots of people with beards and glasses and single speed bikes or oligarchs' wives with great big handbags looking a bit perturbed and puzzled by what they're staring at (...) and so if those people are kind of staring at it, there's quite a high chance that it's art.
7. The rubbish dump test.
   If you want to test a work of art, throw it onto a rubbish dump. And if people walking by notice that it's there and say "Oh what's that artwork doing on that rubbish dump", it's passed.
